Auf Grund der kürzlich festgestellten Leitungsprobleme von Citrix XenServer 5.6 auf AMD Plattformen haben wir nun eine Testreihe von verschiedener Server Virtualisierungs-Software Systemen gestartet. Das Ergebnis ist teilweise recht erschütternd.
Getestet wurde:
- Citrix XenServer 5.5
- Citrix XenServer 5.6
- VMWare ESXi 4.1
- VMWare Server 1.0.10
- VMWare Server 2.0.2
- OpenVZ + KVM (Proxmox VE)
Die Testreihe wurde auf einem Dell Optiplex 745 mit Intel Core 2 Duo und 6GB Ram durchgeführt. Da dieses System mit einem alter von 4 Jahren schnell an seine Leistungsgrenze kommt kann man sehr gut die Leistungsunterschiede sehen. Hier kann man sofort auch ohne Benchmark Tool sehen wer schneller oder langsamer ist. Um das ganze aber mit Meßbaren Zahlen zu hinterlegen haben wir die Test auf Debian 5 mit Byte-Unixbench durchgeführt.
Für diesen Test wurde je 1 mal ein Windows XP und 1 mal Debian 5 32bit installiert. Gemessen wurde immer mit dem Benchmark Tool Unixbench auf dem Debian5 32bit. Einmal wenn sich die XP Maschine im Leerlauf befindet und einmal wurde die XP Maschine mit CPU-Burn auf 100% Last getrieben. In diesen 2 zuständen wurde dann der Test auf dem Debian5 Gastsystem mit Byte-Unixbench durchgeführt.
Hier die Ergebnisse:

Das Ergebnis ist sehr ernüchternd. Es ist fast nicht zu glauben wie schlecht der Citrix XenServer im Test abschneidet. Dass der XenServer langsam ist bemerkt man auch stark, wenn man z.B. die XP Maschine startet. Es dauert um ein vielfaches länger als bei VMWare. Zwischen VMWare und OpenVZ + KVM ist der gefühlte Unterschied nicht so hoch. Aber dennoch ist bei den gemessenen Werten ein sehr hoher Unterschied.
Wir werden in Kürze die Testreihe mit neuer moderner Hardware nochmals durchführen. Eventuell ist der Grund für das schlechte Abschneiden von Citrix XenServer, auf das Fehlen von den neuen Befehlssätzen in dem bei diesem Test verwendeten Core 2 Duo Prozessor zurückzuführen.
